Yoga FAQ for Begginers

Hatha Yoga is universally recommended for beginners. Its slower pace allows you to learn foundational postures, proper alignment, and breathing techniques without feeling rushed. Other excellent beginner-friendly styles include Gentle Vinyasa, Yin Yoga, and Iyengar Yoga (which uses props for support).

No! This is the most common myth about yoga. You do not need to be flexible to start. Yoga is a practice designed to build flexibility, strength, and body awareness over time. Think of it this way: you start yoga to become flexible, not because you already are.

While both involve stretching, yoga is a holistic practice that integrates the body, mind, and breath.

YogaStretching
Integrates breathwork (pranayama) and meditationPrimarily focuses on physical muscles and joints
Aims for union of mind, body, and spiritGoal is usually physical flexibility or warm-up/cool-down
Develops strength, balance, and mental focusDevelops mainly flexibility

Yes, but with caution and guidance. It is crucial to:

  • Consult your doctor first for clearance.

  • Inform your yoga instructor about your injury or condition before class.

  • Opt for private sessions or yoga therapy for a fully personalized practice. At Yoga Inner Power, Shikha Arya’s medical background is a significant advantage, as she can create safe, therapeutic practices tailored to your specific needs.

The "best" time is what fits your schedule and body rhythm.

  • Morning: Ideal for energizing practices (like Vinyasa) to wake up the body and set a positive tone for the day.

  • Evening: Perfect for calming practices (like Yin or Restorative Yoga) to release the day's stress and prepare for restful sleep.

The most important thing is consistency. Practicing at the same time each day helps build a sustainable habit.

Beginner Practice Help

Choosing the right class depends on your personal goals, energy level, and experience. Use this simple guide:

  • If you are a complete beginner or want a strong foundation:

    • Choose: Hatha Yoga or a "Yoga Foundations" class.

  • If you want a dynamic, energetic workout to build strength and stamina:

    • Choose: Vinyasa Flow or Ashtanga Yoga.

  • If you are dealing with stress, anxiety, or want deep relaxation:

    • Choose: Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, or a dedicated Meditation & Pranayama class.

  • If you have a specific injury or health condition (e.g., back pain, high blood pressure):

    • Choose: Yoga Therapy or a Private Session for a fully personalized approach.

Still Unsure? We always recommend starting with a Hatha or Gentle Flow class to build your foundation. You can also call us or book a free discovery call with Shikha to get a personal recommendation.

Yes, absolutely. Our group classes are designed to be accessible and adaptable for everyone, from absolute beginners to experienced practitioners.

  • We Provide Modifications: Instructors consistently offer easier variations and more advanced options for every pose.

  • Small Class Sizes: This allows Shikha and our team to give personalized attention to ensure you are practicing safely and effectively.

  • Focus on Your Own Journey: Yoga is a non-competitive practice. You are always encouraged to listen to your body and honor its limits on any given day.

  • Specific "Beginner-Friendly" Classes: We clearly label classes that are ideal for those just starting out.

While each style has its unique flow, a typical 60-minute class at Yoga Inner Power follows this general structure:

  1. Centering & Intention (5-10 minutes):

    • The class begins by settling in. You'll be guided to bring awareness to your breath, let go of the day's distractions, and set a personal intention for your practice.

  2. Warm-Up & Breathwork (Pranayama) (5-10 minutes):

    • Gentle movements to awaken the spine and warm up the major muscle groups.

    • You'll be introduced to the specific breathing technique for the class (e.g., Ujjayi breath in Vinyasa).

  3. The Main Practice (Asana) (30-40 minutes):

    • In a Hatha Class: You'll move through a series of foundational standing and seated postures, holding each for several breaths to explore alignment.

    • In a Vinyasa Class: You'll flow through a sequence of postures, synchronizing each movement with your breath in a "moving meditation."

    • In a Yin Class: You'll settle into a series of passive, floor-based poses, supported by props, and hold them for several minutes to target deep connective tissues.

  4. Cool-Down & Final Relaxation (Savasana) (5-10 minutes):

    • The practice winds down with gentle cool-down stretches.

    • Every class ends with Savasana (Corpse Pose), a guided deep relaxation where you lie still and absorb all the benefits of your practice. This is often students' favorite part!
